Anyway there are three things to understand . 1; Yourself. 2; The Supreme Lord. 3; The material energy.
First thing to understand is how we, the conscious person , differ from the body. The body is temporary and it is composed of substances that in there separated state are an embarrassment to us, such as ,blood , stool, urine, bones, mucose, muscle, etc etc. They in themselves constitute a repulsive substance of no worth. However when they are neatly held together by the air around us, wrapped in skin and decorated with hair and nails we find them attractive. We actually become bewildered by it and think it is ourself.
Krsna says in the Bhagavad Gita 18.61. The Supreme Lord is situated in everyones heart , Oh Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine , made of the material energy.
This body is not alive, only by the presence of the living spirit soul does it appear to have life. Even great atheists like Hawkins will tell you you are not this body.
So this needs some contemplation on your part, once you can experience a distinction between you , your mind, intellect and body you will start to make progress for we cannot understand anything unless we know ourself.
You will need an aid to experience this as it is very difficult , actually impossible, to do it without some connection with the Transcendental nature.
So if you like and are not opposed to experimentation, you can take to chanting the Hare Krsna Mantra. This will very easily put you in a semi transcendental state where you will be able to witness the activities of your mind as a separate energy. Just find a quite place ,have the mantra written down and without any apprehension dive in , just as you would dive into a crystal clear flower filled lake on a hot summers day. Your only expectation is relief and happiness.

I also love Hafiz, but I suppose that section is for Vaisnava poets only in which case I am somewhat familiar with Vidyapati, Jayadeva, and Chandidas. I am also philosophically inclined too, but that usually remains overshadowed by my poetic nature. :-)
