I Was Born In South India And Hail From a Cosmopolitan Family That is to Say,My Father Was From The North of India And My Mother Was From the South of India.My parents have passed away ever since i came back from the netherlands seven years ago to look after them.looking after parents in their old age is the greatest and the noblest seva one can do for ones parents.providing them with loving care will make you remind yourself about the times when you yourself were very young and helpless in their care and so when it is time to look after them,please do so with loving care for our beloved father Lord Sri-Krishna is watching all of this and will ultimately reward those who pass and go through this ordeal.Haribol!Ihave been in india ever since.

I was born in the south of india in a state called kerala,in the city of cochin.kochi(cochin)was home to a tiny,isolated and unexpected jewish community descended from jewish settlers who fled palestine 2000 years ago.the first jewish settlement was at kodungallur(cranganore),north of cochin.like the syrian orthodox christians,the jews became involved in the trade and commerce of the malabar coast.preserved in the mattancherry synagogue are a number of copper plates bearing an ancient insription granting the village of anjuvannam(near kodungallur) and its revenue to a jewish merchant,joseph rabban,by king bhaskara ravi varman(962-1020).you can see these plates with the permission of the synagogue guardian.
concessions given to joseph rabban by ravi varman1 included permission to use a palanquin and parasol.palanquins and parasols in those days were the prerogative of rulers,so in effect,ravi varman1 had sanctioned the creation of a tiny jewish kingdom.on rabbans death,his sons fought each other for control of the ,"kingdom" and this rivalry led to its break-up and the move to mattancherry.
Our tiny little community has been the subject of much research.
An interesting study by an american friend of mine who is incidently also a professor of ethnomusicology found that the music of us cochin jews contained strong babylonian influences,and that our version of the ten commandments was almost identical to a kurdish version housed in the berlin music archives.of course,there has also been much local influence,and many of the hymns are similar to ragas.
Our community has diminished rapidly since indian independance and now numbers only about one or two since a majority of them including many of my friends have since a long time ago migrated to israel.they now live in settlements in the south of israel in a place called mitzpah-ramon and askhelon where they are provided with social and housing allowances including israeli citizenship.
I myself would not like to go there as they(my friends)are all smoking tobacco,drinking a lot of wine and also eating a lot of meat but of course kosher.it would perhaps be a good idea to go there for preaching for a while but certainly not for living together with them in a settlement.and also it is quite a dangerous area to live and so why not live in freedom like over here in india.
Back in cochin there are hardly any adult males to perform certain rituals without outside assistance.there has been no rabbi within my living memory and so all the elders(who do not live there anyway) are qualified to perform religious ceremonies and marriages.
Kabe-Krsna-dhana paba,hiyara majhare thobha,
judaiba tapita-parana
sajaiya diba hiya,vasaiba prana-priya,
nirakhiba se candra-bayana(1)
When will i attain Krsna,the treasure of my life,and hold him in my heart,thus relieving my life of the burning pain of separation from him?after decorating my heart,i shall seat the beloved there and behold his moon-like face.

The Eternal Wheels Of Time

The beach at Chandrabhaga near Konark is a dull grey blanket when i reach there early in the morning,eyes half shut,mind still on"where-is-my-herbal-tea"mode.

Whatever happened to the famous'East coast' sunrise that i woke up at 5 am for?

The rain.

That is what happened.And so chandrabhaga wears a deserted look,a few early morning types wetting their feet tentatively in the angry waters,creating enough noise to make up for their lack of numbers.
