In 1976 I was living in Boston . A friend of mine, who introduced me to almost all the esoteric and yoga paths that were well- known in America at that time, one day talked to me about Krsna, an 'avatar', according to him, (he was impersonalist). Until that time I had visited a number of those paths and yoga groups, but none of them could deeply satisfy my heart. Then, when I heard that word, I immediately said, 'Can you tell me more about Krsna? I think I have heard that name before, but I don't know anything about him.'. Then he told me that this 'avatar' had come as a country boy who took care of cows, and played the flute, and while doing so, he enchanted all the cowherd maidens of the village, and all fell in love with him. I loved that story ( I was a romantic girl, ) and immediately asked him if he knew of a book where I could read more aboout this cowherd-boy 'Krsna'. But he said 'No', so I could only hope of the day when I could find something in a library or bookstore. Then one day I talked to a young man in yogi pants, and he told me it was not difficult to meet the Hare Krsna people, as they used to chant and dance in the park. They would probably give me such book and more details about 'Krsna.' Although I had seen those 'Hare Krsnas' a few times in the past, I did not see them again after talking to this man. Then one day I was searching for an easy and flexible kind of job, and there was an agency in Boston where you could get a baby-sitting job according to your ideas, and I looked it up in the telephone directory.......'International Sitting Service'. It so happened that when I read that line my eyes immediately went up to the next line, which read....'International Society for Krsna Consciousness'. My eyes could not believe what they were seeing....'Oh! This must be the place of Krsna which I'm looking for! I don't believe it!' I immediately called them up and they told me all about their daily classes ( Bhagavad Gita'etc') and their Sunday feast, and sure enough the next Sunday I was the first guest to arrive, and after that I never failed going to those feasts,(one of the main reasons being...that unforgettable golden halava with raisins they used to serve!) and started going to some classes, too. I also went to stay overnight on some week-ends, when the devotees invited me...and after a few months, I could not help but moving in!!!!....HARIBOL!!!
I cannot tell how I met Srila Prabhupada..... because I never did, only by heart, as Srila Prabhupada was already ill in Vrindavan, but in his usually unserpassably merciful way, he sent me his Harinam initiation by letter, along with my name!!!
