About Me:
I have always had an interest in God and finding Truth, being raised a protestant Christian. I was much interested in astronomy in my early years, but along came the sixties and all that that entailed in Canada. Shamanic journeys, experiments with Buddhism, and then taking up vegetarianism, and tons of reading in spiritist and pop-yoga literature later, I asked God to please reveal to me His Name, and then I would consider all my prayers and life fulfilled ! During a psychedelic journey, I realized I am not the body, that there was indeed an active chakra system, that life was meaningful although this world was full of flaws.

Soon, I met the New Vrndavana travelling sankirtana devotees performing Harinama kirtana in my home city, and I got that Name, and immediately decided to join, but I was told I was too young (age 16). So, I continued my school life and reading of Gita As It Is by Srila Prabhupada, and some chanting, all of which convinced me ever more deeply. Sri Krsna was what everyone was looking for!

At age 18, 1972, I joined New Vrndavana, and later served in Toronto, Winnipeg, Montreal, and still later, Bhubaneswara temple in 1977-1979. I left temple life at age 26, married, one son, went to university, did some preaching and books to associates, etc., including even in Saudi Arabia. etc. Sometimes it seems like a long life.

A precedent has been set by another devotee, HH. B.V. Bhagavata Swami Maharajah, of describing some of their early spiritual events which they were fortunate enough to attend, in a descriptive list. I find it helpful in defining a devotees life, and nectar to recall. Here goes;
1.1st. initiated in Winnipeg in ' '74, after almost two years of brahmacari preparations, and BTG distribution
2. Attended full solar eclipse at Kuruksetra, ' '76
3. First personal service to Srila Prabhupada of carrying his bags, during the Chicago installation of Gour Nitai Deities in Radha Damodara buses.
4. Srila Prabhupada specifically blessed us Winnipeg sankirtana devotees !
5.. 2nd initiation in Sridhama Mayapura on Gaura Purnima, full lunar eclipse that evening '76, said 1st gayatri in Ganga, kijay!
6. Maha -kumbha mela attendance, '76 ; served Srila Prabhupada personally by finding his shoes,( after wearing them on my head and eating the dust!), also tasting his medecine remnants, and fetching him bathing water from the auspicious brahm muhurta time at the tribeni.
7. I attended the installation of Sri Sri Radha-Gopinatha while serving at Toronto, and the Installation of Radha Manohara, Montreal, attended installation of Lord Sita-Rama at the opening of Bombay temple, and the official opening of Krsna Balarma mandira in Vrndavana.
8. Lokanatha Swami and associates and I did hari-kirtana at the five hundredth anniversary in Varanasi, Venkteswara Mandira, of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's visit there.
9. Served Gour Govinda Maharajah, whom I consider my siska guru, and Bhagavata Swami, my dear Godbrother and also a siksa guru, in '78 -' 80. Gave talk at the installation of his deity in samadhi in 1997, Bhubaneswara.

Actually, the auspicious occassions are copious, I cannot list them all, all thanks to HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

Now I am taking care of an aged parent devotee, as the only son available, and we shall see what Krsna arranges. My health is not too good at age 54; diabetes, bad knee. If I am restricted in my active service, like cooking, I can still do, now and in future, other services such as my favorite; harinama sankirtana!

I am hoping to perfect my vanaprastha life by begging for the Pure Name; Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, and chanting the panca-tattva mantra lots! PAMHO to all the devotees !

Ealy Days in Bhububaneswara with Gour Govinda Swami, Pt. 2

I had the greatest respect for Gour Govinda Swami right away. One could see his transcendental spirit. He was non- assuming, joyful, glowing, self controlled, simple, personable, pure, unfetterred by illusion. He was always friendly, though sometimes his scholarly side would be more apparent, such as when giving Sunday class, or by dint of the simple fa… Continue

Intro; the Early Days in Iskcon Bhubaneswara, 1977-1980

About five years devotee now, I had been engaged in Montreal temple as sometimes sankirtana devotee brahmacari cook and pujari of Jagannatha Swami, Baladeva Prabhuji, and Srimati Subhadra-deviji. Between duties, I was one of the best candle carvers of our temple-purchase business, and earned a smallish stip… Continue

Bhajana Jharikhanda

Through the endless verdant forest, Sri Caitanya roams
In the jungle Jharikhanda, this time so happy on His own.
In His blissful mood, the Lord’s ecstasy soars
Dancing with the elephants, to the tigers’ delighted roars!
He and they, together again! – the animals had no fears, Theirs the greatest fortune when Ma… Continue

Tamohara Prabhu;

Dandavat pranams. Jai Shree Guru and Gouranga. I have not that much I could write about Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja. I had very little association, whereas by former biz-partner used to travel with him and in some instances drove the Maharaja around in his motorhome.
I would ask him [stephan@gopalshealthfoods.com] for some input. He is always looking for serious people to join his community, so if he gets some place to advertise his Texas farm he will be happy.
I would be very interested to hear about the early pastimes and I am sure Madhavananda from Bhuvanesvar would too.
Hari bol,
Avadhoot Maharaja

Tamohara Prabhuji;

Hare Krishna. Thank you for your gift. I read your info online and was very pleased to see you took siksha from Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja. I bought some of his videos from the Gour Govinda Temple in Vrindavan and was just watching them this morning. He is such a powerful Vaishnava who tried his best to give the truth despite the opposition. He gave me so much inspiration in bhakti. You were blessed to have his association. Such association is really our life and soul. Like the old Frank Sinatra song, 'If you can get it , won't you tell me how?"
When I saw Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja in the L.A. Temple it was such an experience
I cannot say in words. There was such an upheaval when he was preaching. His remarks about the GBC vote on jiva-tattva are classic. There is definitely an evolution of Krishna-bhakti in this world which plays out via these empowered souls. I pray to be always in such association.
Jaya Hari bol,
Avadhoot Maharaja

Hare Krsna,
Dandavats. Pranams. Jai Guru & Gauranga!
Nice to receive your invite and thank you for sharing your very inspirational story. I am sure our paths have crossed as I was at the Evanston Temple in '75 as were you. It was so sublime to be there at that magical time. Srila Prabhupada came there so it was a tirtha-holy place! Whole lotta kirtan going on and also prasadam distribution.
