I am now in Moscow, Russia and will probably come only next january. Rohini is in England. Go to the temple and buy a japa mala there so you can chant regularly. You cannot wait for so long without a japa mala. I don't understand why Rohini said only I could give you one...?
Do not be desperate! Don't worry, be happy, as in the famous song. And happiness lies in the association of Krishna and his devotees. Srila Gurudeva said that nobody can be happy without chanting. You can get a few drops of pleaure in the arms of a lover, but it is mixed with so many negative emotions, as you already experienced. Krishna is the lover of the soul, oue eternel sweet lover/ he wil never cheat us or leave us.

Our understanding is that Krishna has made this world in a way that one always has to struggle. The idea is that, at one point, one will get fed up of trying to squeeze out some pleasure from this material energy and having to pay such a 'black market price' for it, and one will then become introspective, look for the truth, turn to Krishna and decide to find one's happiness in the love relationship with him instead of in this world.
In this way, suffering is an impetus to question one's approach of life and rectify it.
The root cause of all our problems is precisely that we're trying to be happy independently and separately from Krishna, which is impoossible, because we are part and parcel of him, as the hand is part and parcel of the body. Can the hand eat the cake without putting it in the mouth? No. But we're trying to do exactly that. It is so much ingrained in us, that we do not question our attitude. We think it is normal to try to enjoy this world; we are not aware that this enjoying spirit will give us trouble as long as we don't turn to Krishna to get our pleasure from him.
This is why the beginning of the surrendering process, or sharanagati, which consists in accepting what is favorable for our spiritual progress (and not for our material enjoyment), and rejecting what is unfavorable for the development of our bhakti, (and not what is going against our plans for material happiness), is called austerity. You may ask: "Why, if Krishna consciousness is supposed to be blissful?" It is actually blissful, but we are so attached, so covered by illusion since time immemeorial, that it tastes bitter to us at the beginning, just like someone who has jaundice cannot appreciate the sweetness of sugar, which is the cure for his disease:
We are diseased, Anita. What we consider normal_enjoying our material life_ is in fact a diseased condition. How can an eternal spirit soul enjoy temporary dead matter? Even in our love stories, the enjoyment comes actually because there is a soul animating the body of our beloved. Take away the soul and the most handsome man or most pretty girl become a corpse which immediately begins to rot and smell. Only the filter of false ego hides reality from our perception. It is the public enemy number one. The only way to get rid of it is through sincere chanting, crying to Krishna for help and mercy, begging him to take away the curtain of illusion cheating us, asking him to give us a taste for his service and his love and to cancel our morbid taste for material enjoyment, which keeps us bound to the painful cycle of birth and death.
Krishna is naturally attactive tothe soul, like a magnet attracts iron, but we are covered by the 'rust' of attachments, so we don't feel he fascinating power of Krishna now. The path of bhakti begins with purifying the consciousness, through chanting, kirtan, prasad, hearing krishna-katha. Gradually, slowly (because we have been here so long and have acquired another foreign nature), we develop faith, attraction, taste. It is a slow process, but what is the alternative? Sit down and cry and lament our fate? We madea big mistake originally in choosing to come and try to control and enjoy this world, and now we are facing the bitter consequence of that choice; but Krishna is very merciful and his heart is soft like a mother's, tgherefore he has made a very easy path out of this world, through the simple chanting of his holy names. take it up seriously, with great determination, seeing this chanting as your lifeline out of this ocean of material existence where we have bben tossed by the waves for so long. How can there be permanent happiness in this world when its creator has stamped it with two 'quality' stamps: TEMPORARY and FULL OF MISERIES?

thank you sooo much for your long letter. No, you didn't hurt me. i was only feeling a little sad that we couldn't meet and associate when i was in your city.
I have read the contents of your letters carefully, and I understand the way you feel, and all the trials you are going and you went through. I call these 'growing pains in Krishna consciousness'. it is quite normal to want to sit back and reflect on one's own without pressure, and decide voluntarily that "yes, I want to have a love connection, a heart connection, with Sri Krishna, the eternal lover of my soul." I am glad to know that you were still chanting his sweet holy names, even if you didn't visit his temple.
maybe you can also try the EFT method for quitting the harmful smoking habit. it usually gives great result.

No matteer what happened, no matter where you are at spiritually now, never give up the understanding that you are Krishna's servant, that he loves you and cares for you and is simply waiting for you to give your love to him, the real darling of your heart.
