RAGHUNATHA DASA GOSVAMI TIROBHAVA
21 October 2003
Vrndavana
Today we are very fortunate that we have the opportunity to observe the tirobhava, the disapperance festival of Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, Srila Raghunatha Bhatta Gosvami and Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami. Here in Vrndavana Dhama under the guidance of Guru and Vaisnavas we have been blessed to hear the glorification from senior Vaisnavas. Today Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami is distributing special mercy. In the form of his disappearance festival he personally comes to us and embraces us and gives us shelter at his lotus feet. These disappearance days of our acaryas must be observed. No one can overlook them. On their disappearance and appearance days they give so much mercy in the form of their blessings. If they are so causelessly merciful to sprinkle their mercy upon us and we neglect to accept it-that means not having hari katha, not having kirtana, not praying to them, not making a feast-then this is actually an offense.
This particular disappearance day is significant for us. On this day the great shining sun of our rupanuga guru-parampara set the world into darkness. Raghunatha dasa Gosvami is prayojana tattva acarya. We have heard from Vaisnavas that he is prayojana tattva acarya. Why? He has given many teachings in his life history. First teaching is that he attained blessings of all Vaisnavas, all the associates of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Anyone can see, read or hear how Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was very renounced and doing very strong bhajana. And we think we will also do bhajana like that, but if we try we cannot do it. Thousands and millions of obstacles come in our minds and check us and our hearts become dry. Only imitating Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami’s final career will not be sufficient to give any success.
First Raghunatha dasa Gosvami in his childhood was living in Adi Saptagrama. All Vaisnavas would come there. He would see Haridasa Thakura coming and call out, “O Dadu, Dadu!” and climb in his lap. Small baby playing in the lap of hdt and hearing the glories of nama from him. Hearing Prahlada upakyana from Srimad-Bhagavatam from him. Haridasa Thakura call tell this because he is an incarnation of Prahlada so he can explain in a convincing way, with so much sraddha.
In his childhood he got blessings of Advaita Acarya. When he was a very small boy in the year 1510, when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa, Nityananda Prabhu brought Him back to Santipura. He wanted to go to Vrndavana.

But what happened? Nityananda Prabhu brought Him back to Santipura by trick. At that time young Raghunatha came. He was a very small boy and Advaita Acarya arranged that he could do service and also take Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s remnants. So from his childhood he had very good association. He is very humble and polite. Because he was pleasing to all, Vaisnavas gave him blessings. Actually blessings of Vaisnavas are infallible. The result of their blessings came if the form of very strong desire to attain Krsna. He was not interested in household life nor in his father’s vast treasury and income. His father, Govardhana Majumdar, was inconceibvably wealthy. He was an international trader doing business in Europe. Gradually, because his desire became so strong, he ran away from home, but his father’s servants would catch him and hold him back again and again.
In 1510 Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa. He was only 24 years olds. After that He went to Puri. From there He went to South India on the pretext of meeting His brother, but really He went to meet with Ramananda Raya. He toured South India for six years and then returned to Puri. For many years He had wanted to go to Vrndavana. He set out for Vrndavana but He went to Ramakeli where He met Rupa and Sanatana, Dabhir Kasa and ?? Mallika. He told them, “Actually, I had no reason to come to Ramakeli. I have come only for you.” Sanatana Gosvami told Him, “Don’t go to Vrndavana now. Everywhere You go many people are following You. If You have many people following You, how can You bhajana and parikrama? With many people there will be some of bad character who will disturb the atmosphere.” Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard but He carried on with His pilgrimage.
When He got as far as Kamatala, He thought, “Sanatana Gosvami is correct. I should not go to Vrndavana surrounded by thousands of people. Everything will be ruined.” So Mahaprabhu turned around and came back. On His way back again He came to Santipura. At that time Raghunatha dasa was about 19 years old. He went to Santipura and again had darsana of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu knew what was in his mind and told him, “Make your mind steady.” Steady means gambhira, deep. “Become deep like the ocean. Go back to your house. Don’t be half mad. Don’t be a crazy fellow. You can cross over the ocean of material existence. I guarantee that you can do it, but gradually, step by step. You should try to have nistha in your heart. Heart should be absorbed deeply in Krsna, not absorbed externally in the things of this world.
